Every few years Troop 98 hosts a Camporee, a weekend campout where Scouts from many other troops gather to compete in Scout skills like first aid, fire building, cooking, pioneering, canoeing, orienteering and more. We always pick a cool theme that ties together all the competitions. In 2009 our theme was Hollywood (every event was based on a movie) and in 2015 our theme was Axis vs. Allies (every event was based on World War II). For each of those events we got to design our very own cool patch. Our Fall Camporee in October 2017 was based on Star Wars and we made it into Boys' Life and Scouting magazines! These are pictures of the patches we designed for each of the camporees we've planned and hosted.

Here are the "Camporee Features" we make sure to include in any event we plan:

  1. Every event is an inter-patrol competition involving Scouting skills

  2. Every event is designed to be challenging yet achievable for any Scout, including AOLs

  3. The Camporee has an exciting theme which is woven into every activity and the grounds, including excellent props!

  4. Each event has clear and objective scoring

  5. Each patrol follows a schedule made up of time blocks and a defined order of events so you have a schedule of where to go and when

  6. Multiple patrols compete simultaneously (for every event); NO WAITING!

  7. There is an "all day" decoding event that patrols can work on during down-time

  8. Complete details of skills and events are communicated well before the camporee so patrols can BE PREPARED!

  9. There are cool awards for the winning patrol at each event

  10. There are special awards for the overall Camporee winners

Green Lane Park is the venue for the Fall 2022 Camporee

Green Lane Park is owned and operated by the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Department [website]. We will have exclusive use of the Deep Creek campground, which has 30 individual campsites, a large group campsite, ample parking, and several bathroom facilities with electricity and flush toilets.

The park also boasts a lake for non-motorized watercraft, a highly detailed orienteering map, and a comprehensive trail system.

Can you find our troop numeral "98" hidden in each patch?

Everyone knows exactly what’s going to happen at each event well in advance.

Provides great opportunity to publicize and generate excitement, and for units to prepare.

A fabulous theme with which to kick off fall programming for troops and AOL dens.

Why does Troop 98 host camporees?

As a very large unit we've found that we are at our best when we are working towards ambitious goals. We ran the BP District Camporee in 2009 [photos], 2015, and 2017 [photos], and we were the "anchor program tenant" for the COL Philadelphia Encampment for every year it has run. An event like this creates the need for us to bring "all hands on deck", create opportunities for youth leadership, and generate tremendous enthusiasm both inside and outside of our unit in the process.
