Winter Cabin Camping at Avondale

Let's go cabin camping at Troop 191's cabin in Avondale. 

Depart: Friday Mar 20 from St. John's at 5:45PM
The cabin is about 1 hour away from STJ MAP HERE. They have a description and photos on this website.

Return: Sunday Mar 22 to St. John's at NOON

We'll be staying in a heated cabin with bunk beds and mattresses, but if it's warm enough (and we check out your gear) you may be able to tent camp. 

Here's what we'll be doing:

1. • learn and practice wilderness survival skills (you can earn most of the merit badge; possibly all of it)

   • go geocaching

   • play wide games like Capture the Flag

   • enjoy a great campfire (we need a Master of Ceremonies; do you need this for Communication MB?)

   • at night, participate in BOARD GAME MANIA (bring your favorite Scout-appropriate board game)

   • you can stay on a bunk in the cabin or tent camp (as long as you have the right gear for the weather)
     
     

Important preparations:

1. Even though we'll be inside a cabin it is not insulated so BE PREPARED for cold weather. Cold preparations and layers and gear packing are HERE. If you don't have a very warm sleeping bag bring two (or three) sleeping bags, plus warm blankets (wool!) to go under and over your sleeping bag. Bring one or more sleeping pads (your thickest/warmest one if you have more than one).

2. NO SNEAKERS. Only good hiking boots or winter boots or outdoor shoes. Bring and wear multiple layers of your warmest socks.

3. Bring your permission slip which will be emailed separately. Note the explicit permission signature block at the bottom to do archery and tomahawks and sign it.

4. Be sure to BRING - Scout handbook, headlamp, water bottle, day pack. We'll be using disposables so no need to bring eating gear.

5. We will have downtime inside the cabin. Bring a board game.

6. If you're coming up Friday with the troop, eat a meal before you leave (or bring a non-sloppy bagged sandwich for the car ride up). We'll have snacks and hot cocoa after we get settled in the cabin.
