Each year Troop 98 is asked to nominate eligible 11th graders for the Union League of Philadelphia's Good Citizen Award. The award is given to US Citizens who are in 11th grade and are nominated by an eligible organization (like Troop 98).
If you're selected, you will spend a day in the city of Philadelphia with all the other awardees, learning about civics, meeting some very neat people, being challenged to solve some hypothetical problems, and enjoying some great companionship and an excellent dinner at the Union League of Philadelphia. Most years you'll also receive a cash award payment.
Among other things, the Union League believes looks for a candidate who:
demonstrates hard work and fair play;
has personal attributes of honesty, courage, tolerance, curiosity and loyalty;
endeavors to follow and uphold the principles of American patriotism.
In addition to looking good on your college applications and maybe getting some cash in your pocket, many Troop 98 Scouts chosen in past years found this to be an exceptionally interesting and rewarding experience.
Your Scout leaders will typically ask you to help them write a better recommendation, and to have you put some "skin in the game". You won't be nominated by Troop 98 if you don't submit the information requested prior to the deadline. Don't worry, though; this isn't like a college essay!
You need to make sure you'll be available on the "Good Citizen Day" (for the entire day, which may require you to ask for an excused absence from school, since it's a weekday).
Quotes from a 2015 Troop 98 participant:
"Probably the best meal I've ever had or ever will have"
"Definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity"
"There were 330 of us and they gave us each 100 dollars. That's 33,000.00 dollars!!!"
