Let's go cabin camping up near the Appalachian Trail! We may also do a side hike on the A-T.
Depart: Friday Feb 7 from St. John's at 5:45PM
Hawk Mountain Camp is a private camp owned by Scout Troop #1 of Oreland MAP HERE. It is *not* the same as Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation. It's near the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
Return: Sunday Feb 9 to St. John's at 3PM *** THIS RETURN IS LATER THAN USUAL ***
We'll be staying in a cabin but you may also be able to tent camp or stay in an adirondack shelter (like the ones at Ajapeu site at Ockanickon). We'll be doing lots of things:
SNOW TUBING at Blue Mountain! We will ask each Scout for a $20 copay for this activity.
making fires in the fireplaces and the wood stove
making great meals
shooting arrows
throwing tomahawks
maybe getting close up with live birds at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
enjoying a cool campfire
You may also optionally choose to go on a day hike on the Appalachian Trail. This depends on the trail conditions and the weather.
Important preparations:
Even though we'll be inside a cabin it is not insulated (it will probably be colder than it is at the Klondike Derby cabin). Cold preparations and layers and gear packing are HERE. If you don't have a very warm sleeping bag bring two (or three) sleeping bags, plus warm blankets (wool!) to go under and over your sleeping bag. Bring one or more sleeping pads (your thickest/warmest one if you have more than one).
NO SNEAKERS. Only good hiking boots or winter boots or outdoor shoes. Bring and wear multiple layers of your warmest socks.
Bring your permission slip which will be emailed separately. Note the explicit permission signature block at the bottom to do archery and tomahawks and sign it.
Be sure to BRING - Scout handbook, headlamp, water bottle, day pack. We'll be using disposables so no need to bring eating gear.
We will have downtime inside the cabin. Bring a board game (or a chess board if you're doing Chess merit badge).
If you're coming up Friday with the troop, eat a meal before you leave (or bring a non-sloppy bagged sandwich for the car ride up). We'll have hot dogs, snacks and hot cocoa after we get settled in the cabin.
