Day Hike on the A-T

Saturday 28th November, 2015

We're going for a DAY HIKE (only) on the Appalachian Trail, on Section 3 north of Allentown. On this section you'll get spectacular views both North and South, and get to see some very interesting rock formations, including Bear Rocks (which are super fun to climb up on), the Knife Edge (which is super challenging to traverse), and Bake Oven Knob, where you can almost always see hawks flying and an occasional bald eagle.
  • Leave from St. John's at 8:30AM on Saturday morning

  • Return to St. John's about 5:30PM on Saturday afternoon
You need to bring:
  • Layered clothes appropriate for the forecasted weather (look for weather in New Tripoli, PA), including sturdy rain gear (raincoat or poncho and hat)

  • Sturdy and waterproof hiking BOOTS or very good hiking SHOES, with appropriate socks (if you're not sure about what kinds of socks to use, consult the REI page HERE or send a note to the Scoutmaster)

  • A day pack with at least 2 quarts of water (a wide-mouth NALGENE type bottle is best), some nutritious snacks (which include protein and fat, not just sugar and carbs) and a nutritious lunch

  • A compass, if you have one

  • Everything you're carrying must be able to go in your pack so your hands are free

  • About $10 for snacks on the way home (ever been to Yocco's?)

Any age Scout may come on this trip, but be warned this is difficult hiking and some sections are very rocky and slippery. We will definitely need adults to accompany us and to drive. Come out and work off some of your turkey dinner!

Get psyched to hike on one of the best sections of the A-T in Pennsylvania!
