Day Hike at Valley Forge Feb2021

==> SIGN UP HERE <==

On the Road to Philmont!  On Sunday 28 February we will DAY HIKE in Valley Forge National Park.

THIS HIKE IS ONLY OPEN TO SCOUTS WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR PHILMONT OR SCOUTS ELIGIBLE TO GO WHO ARE STILL CONSIDERING JOINING THE TRIP. You can see who that is HERE. Your parent(s) are welcome to join us if they have appropriate gear and are confident in being able to hike this distance and terrain.

WHY?  Because it is there. Because it is fun. Because you need five 10-mile hikes to complete the Hiking merit badge (Eagle required). Because to "Be Prepared" for Philmont, 10 miles in Valley Forge Park needs to become a "walk in the park."

WHEN?  Sunday 28th February • Meet at 10AM sharp at the Cradle of Liberty Council Scout office Parking Lot DIRECTIONS.  We expect to be back at the same parking lot at 3PM for pickup. We will call/message if we're going to be substantially earlier or later than that time.

How far are we hiking? About 7.5 miles (hiking map). At least part of this trail has some decent elevation (profile at the top of this page). We will spend some time on Philmont "skills instruction" during the hike.

YOU NEED?

  • To RSVP HERE
  • To bring your signed PERMISSION SLIP (will be sent by email to those who RSVP)
  • To wear appropriate clothes (check the weather) and good shoes (hiking boots or rugged snow boots)
  • To bring a backpack loaded with at least 1/5 of your body weight (email the Scoutmaster if you need to borrow one)
  • To bring water (at least two liters) and something for lunch
  • Check out the PHILMONT TEN ESSENTIALS here.

WHO?  The hike will be led by SM Bob and ASM Shawn.

Bad Weather?  If the weather looks threatening (lightening, hail, tornados, etc.), we may reschedule. A little rain will not stop us. Check the www.bsa98.com web site before heading out.
