Backpacking on the Horseshoe Trail May 2021

Let's go backpacking from Friday to Sunday May 14-16!  This is a backpacking prep trip for Philmont.

On Friday we will gather at St. John's at 6PM to review personal gear (shakedown) plus crew gear for the trip. We will discuss and divide crew gear.
  • Please make sure you arrive fully packed and prepared to go backpacking (pretend we're actually beginning to hike the moment you arrive, which means nothing but your fully-paced backpack and the clothes/boots you're wearing).
  • Please fill your water bottles before arriving at St. John's. We want to minimize time inside the building.
  • We will distribute and add crew gear and meals after you arrive.
  • There will be 32 oz. Nalgene water bottles for sale ($6) and good headlamps ($12 or $15, which includes batteries)
  • Eat or bring a simple dinner; we will order a pizza snack for later in the evening.
  • If we have time, we'll review CREW LINEUPS and discuss itineraries.
  • Finally, we will go out back and set up our tents and go to sleep. If you have a tent, bring it. If you have a spare tent(s), bring it(them).
On Saturday we'll get up early (6:15AM) and break camp with a goal of being ready to roll by 7AM.  DRIVERS: If you're coming on Saturday morning to drive your Scout to the trail please arrive by 6:55AM. You will be driving from St. John's to Hopewell Furnace, about a 55 minute drive (DIRECTIONS).

We'll begin backpacking at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site (next to French Creek State Park) and hike through the cool town of St. Peters (which has an Arcade of antique games; check them out HERE and bring some spending money!).  We'll end up at Warwick County Park, where we will set up camp and continue working on Philmont skills and crew dynamics.

On Sunday we'll break camp again and we may do some navigation work at the park before adding a few more miles.
Pickup is at 11AM in the parking lot of the French Creek Valley Elementary School, 3590 Coventryville Road, Pottstown, PA [MAP].
